MONKLEY, Harry Frederick, AB, V15121, RCNVR, MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - Son of Mr and Mrs. Fred Monkley, of Smithers, British Columbia; father of Frederick Walter (3) and Lillian Jean (18 mos), of Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
AB Monkley died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost.
Prior to his enlisting he worked for the CNR at Prince Rupert. Able Seaman Monkley, who was 25, went to Prince Rupert as a boy and was educated there. He belonged to the Prince Rupert Sea Cadets and later joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve.
