They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
SHEFLIN, John Edward, SA, V27746, RCNVR, MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - Son of Charles E. Sheflin, and of Winnifred Sheflin, of Toronto, Ontario; husband of Marguerite Sheflin, of Eureka, Nova Scotia.
SA Sheflin died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost.
John Edward Sheflin was 26; he was born in Rochester, N.Y., son of Charles E. Sheflin, and of Winnifred Sheflin, and came to Toronto, when he was six. His parents, who now live on Lincoln Ave., have received official word that he was lost when the Raccoon went down. He was educated at De La Salle collegiate and St. May's College Brockville. John Sheflin was a track star in school. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy last summer, going immediately to Halifax. He joined the H.M.C.S. Raccoon about three months ago. Two weeks ago Mrs. John Sheflin moved from Toronto to Nova Scotia to be near her husband when he got leave from H.M.C.S. Raccoon. On Saturday she received word that John was lost when his ship was sunk. Mrs. Shflin has two boys James, five and Michael, three. His brother Charles is training with the R.C.A.F. in Canada and he has one other brother Eugene. Mrs. L. Murphy of Toronto is a sister. In his last letter to his wife, received a few days before news that he was missing, John stated that everything is going fine.
