SWEENEY, Michael, Tel, V23565, RCNVR, MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - Son of Thomas and Margaret Sweeney, of Montreal, Quebec.
Tel Sweeney died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost.
Telegraphist Michael Sweeney is son of Mrs. Margaret Sweeney, 7516 Querbes Ave. He was only 21 year of age when he joined the R.C.N.V.R. two years ago. He attended the Luke Callaghan Memorial School and before enlisting in the navy was employed by the Royal Typewriter Company, Park Ave. A brother Daniel is serving with the Royal Canadian Navy overseas. In addition to the brother, Daniel the family consists of the father Thomas Sweeney, and Mrs. Sweeney, Miss Doris Sweeney and four other brothers, Leo, George, Edward and Robert.
Michael's brother, Daniel Sweeney, was serving in HMCS DAUPHIN as the time of Michael's death.
