COLYER, Donald A. - served in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He was born in October 14, 1924, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was active as a youth in the Navy League and in 1939 formed part of the procession for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Winnipeg. At the age of 15, he joined the navy as a boy bugler, and was sent to Halifax where he attended Cornwallis. He served primarily on Corvettes - HMCS SOREL and HMCS COBOURG being the main two. He was a Higher Submarine Detector. In May 1945 he married Margaret Lindsay, from Toronto, and not long after was recalled to Halifax to be released. His final rank was Chief Petty Officer. The last ship he served on, at the end of the war the COBOURG. Many years later, in the late 1960’s he moved to the town of Cobourg, where he was part of a group that brought the original ships bell from HMCS COBOURG, to the town. He lived in the Cobourg area for many years, and in 1996, he and his wife Marg moved to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, to be closer to their daughter and her family. He passed away in August 2001.
