CASSIDY, Bernard Joseph Gordon - It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Bernard (Bernie) Joseph Gordon Cassidy of Halifax, Nova Scotia on Feb 5, 2023. He left this world peacefully two days short of his 94th birthday. Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Henry and Loretta (Melanson) Cassidy. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the Toronto Naval Division in 1950 and was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1955. He retired in 1976 with 27 years of loyal service. Bernie continued his career as a Stationary Engineer in various downtown Halifax office buildings. He was a member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officer’s Association, Fairview Legion #142, and the Royal Canadian Navy Association Peregrine Branch. Bernie was also a member of St. Michael’s Parish for over 60 years and was instrumental in its maintenance over the years. Following retirement, Bernie and his wife Ruth loved to travel; especially their cross-country trips across Canada and Roadtrek rallies in the USA. Bernie was an avid reader, especially of history and hockey books. He was a dedicated Montreal Canadiens fan, a faithful supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays, and a longtime season ticket holder for the Halifax Moosehead hockey club.
He is survived by sons David (Janet) – Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont; Brian (Marnie) – Ripley, Ont; Blair (Penny) – Halifax, N.S.; Grandchildren: Sheila, Julie, Sarah, Lauren, Hannah, Emily, and Courtney. He will also be missed by several Nieces and Nephews from Bathurst, New Brunswick and Ontario. Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, Brothers; Francis, Clifford, Henry, Wilfred, and sisters; Mary Duguay and Teresa Freeman. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers. Sincere thanks to Dr. Kailee Sutherland and Staff from the Spryfield Medical Centre and the amazing team at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital for their care and kindness, specifically for their compassion over his last few days.
Visitation will be held at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road in Spryfield from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michaels’s Church or a charity of one’s choice in Bernie’s name. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 14 St. Michael’s Avenue, Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11 AM, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 7076 Mumford Road.
Bernie was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all for his quick wit, strong values and unwavering loyalty. Anyone that met him described him as a really great guy.
He is now at peace with the love of his life, Ruth.
