GRAY, Gordon Tilford, L/Sto, V10694, RCNVR, MPK - 18 Mar 1945, HMCS GUYSBOROUGH - Son of Joshua and Josephine Gray, of Sylvania, Saskatchewan.
L/Sto Gray died died when his ship, HMCS GUYSBOROUGH, was torpedoed and sunk by U-868 in the Bay of Biscay with the loss of 53 of her crew.
Leading Stoker Gordon Gray aged 25 years has been listed as one of the missing in the sinking of the HMCS Guysborough, the ship was reported lost March 18, 1945. He is lost at sea, and went down with the ship. Gordon was born on September 29, 1919 at a farm in Sylvania, Saskatchewan. He took his schooling in Allanville, Saskatchewan in a one room school. He left school and took up farming. Gordon joined the Canadian Navy in 1941, after having spent 3 months with the Regina Rifles and trained at Toronto, Esquimalt and then Halifax. In 1942 he was drafted to the Corvet "Prescott" and was on coastal duty between Halifax, Boston and Newfoundland until September of that year when he left for overseas. Upon arriving at Londonderry, Ireland he was put on convoy duty that took him to the Mediterranean. He arrived back in Halifax in April, 1943, returning overseas. He was home on leave in January 1945, and returned to duty February 2nd, 1945. Besides his parents who survived him, also 3 sisters and 4 brothers. His brother Stanley served in the Canadian Army.
