They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
CONNOR, John Walter, Sto 1c, V2408, RCNVR, MPK - 10 Feb 1942, HMCS SPIKENARD - Son of James W. and of Della Winnifred Connor; husband of Alice Helena Connor, all of Saint John, NB.
Stoker Connor died when his ship, HMCS SPIKENARD, was torpedoed and sunk by U-136, about 465 nautical miles west of Malin Head, Ireland while escorting convoy SC-67. Of her crew of 65, there were only 8 survivors.
Lost in "Spikenard" - Stoker John Walter Connor, of West Saint John, N.B., above, with wife and child, has been reported missing, presumed lost, as a result of the sinking of H.M.C.S. "Spikenard" by enemy action in February. Mr. Connor first entered the service of the company as trucker at West Saint John, in December, 1936, and worked each winter season as a trucker until December, 1939, when he became a yardman in Saint John Terminals. In May, 1940, he enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R., later proceeding on active service as stoker, which post he filled until the time of his decease. Mr. Connor was well known in railway circles and will be sadly missed by his associates. He is survived by his wife and young child.
John's brother, George Wilton Connor also served in the RCNVR during the Second World War.
