They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
HOUNSELL, Lionel Raymond Edward, OS, V23734, RCNVR, MPK - 10 Feb 1942, HMCS SPIKENARD - Son of John and Muriel Hounsell, Montreal, Quebec.
OS Hounsell died when his ship, HMCS SPIKENARD, was torpedoed and sunk by U-136, about 465 nautical miles west of Malin Head, Ireland while escorting convoy SC-67. Of her crew of 65, there were only 8 survivors.
Ordinary Seaman Lionel Raymond Edward Hounsell, age 20, whose sister Mrs. Nesta Lancaster, lives at 3451 Shuter Street, is only 19 and enlisted last May. A brother, John Hounsell, is also in the Navy. Two other sisters here are Miss Geraldine Hounsell and Mrs. Patricia Beebe.
