In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
GUMMERSALL, Dorothy (née STEPHENSON) - On Monday, April 10, 2023, Dorothy Gummersall (née Stephenson), passed away at the age of 88. She passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. She joins her late husband, Fred (Alfred) (1974) and is succeeded by her children, Paul (Kimberly), John (Mary) and Cheryl (Alastair); her grandchildren, Melissa, William, Krysta, Caroline, Paige and Stephen; her great-grandchildren, Dalylah, Avalon, Rhyer, Jace, Nolan, Mia and Finnley; and her nieces and nephews. Dorothy had an extensive career and many stories to tell. She was a sub-lieutenant and nursing sister in the Royal Canadian Navy and was dutifully engaged in her community. As a veteran, Dorothy was an active member of the Aurora Legion and, throughout her time, made positive impressions on many dignitaries. She also spent ten years volunteering for the Town of Aurora, answering people's questions and being a smiling face people could count on. Dorothy also had an immense interest in history, whether it be her family or local history. She was the founding member of the Richmond Hill Historical Society and a member of the Aurora Historical Society. She enjoyed dressing as Queen Victoria at various community events, having mastered the regal wave. Dorothy also had a beautiful voice, which was heard while she played piano or sang in many choirs. Dorothy was a beloved figure to all and will be dearly missed. The family thanks the caregivers and staff at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. A Visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, on Saturday, April 22nd, from 11 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 1 p.m. (The Toronto Star 15 Apr 2023)
