In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
DOUTRE, Gilles Joseph Albert (Pierre) (China) - With profound sadness, we announce the sudden death on April 29, 2016 of our beloved Gilles Joseph Albert Doutre, 74, following heart surgery at the Halifax Infirmary. Gilles was born in Sherbrooke, Québec on January 21, 1942. Left behind brokenhearted are his wife Donna (McKenzie), 98 year-old mother Juliette Quimper, sisters Lise Joly (Michel) and Diane, brothers Yves (Danielle), Jacques (Jeanne d'Arc Rathé), children Angela Doutre Halvorsen (Randy), Gerald Doutre (Nicole), Jason Doutre (Stephanie), Dawn White (Brad England), James White (Annette Leblanc), grandchildren Joshua, Marissa, Abbie, and Chloe Doutre, Emma Halvorsen, Logan, Kaegan, Gabe, and Sam England, three nephews and many, many good friends. Gilles was predeceased by his first wife Shirley (Wright) and step-father Paul Ranger. Upon graduation from École des Métiers in Montréal, Gilles joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served proudly for over twenty-eight years as a marine electrician – mostly within the Submarine Service. He was a forty-six year member of the Royal Canadian Legion – Elmsdale Branch 48. Gilles was best known as “China” by his Navy buddies, and “Pierre” by his many admirers. He loved technology, and spent a lot of time tinkering on his computers, and video-chatting with friends and family, especially those in Quebec. Legion/Funeral service will be on Thursday, May 5th at 1:00pm at Christ Church, 14 Church St. Lantz, Nova Scotia. Reception to follow at the Elmsdale Legion, 850 Hwy. 2, Elmsdale. Committal of ashes at sea will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
