McVARNOCK, Thomas - age 73, of Lower Sackville passed away November 14, 2011 at the QE II HSC, VG Site. Born on November 15, 1937 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret McVarnock. Thomas joined the RC Navy in 1957, serving on various RC Navy submarines until 1965 , when he commissioned HMCS Ojibwa. In 1968 he emigrated to Canada with his family and served in various submarines and ships including HMCS Cormorant and HMCS Preserver, where he was the Chief Engineer. Tom retired from the Navy in 1986 and then worked at Saint John Shipbuilding and the DND Dockyard, retiring in the early nineties. He was an avid guitarist and singer and enjoyed golf and working in his garden. He is survived by sons Steven (Julie), McVarnock, Iqaluit, Nunavut, Robert (Kim) Eastern Passage; sister Patricia, England; grandchildren Chantale , Patrick, Alicia, Conor and Liam. Tom was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (McCann) McVarnock. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive. A memorial service will be held Friday 10 am in the Sackville Legion 45 Sackville Crossroad. Rev. Robert Chapman officiating. A reception will follow in the Legion.
