He was a Purser's Writer in 1929 in RMS Niagara on the Australia run. Later he worked for Straits Towing in the 1930s.
In 1943 Fairmiles commanded by him served in a mine-sweeping flotilla which cleared over four hundred magnetic mines from North African, Sicilian, and Italian waters and was the first to enter the harbours at Catania, Tripoli and Sfax.
After his naval service he earned a commerce degree and an education degree from UBC. He headed the Canadian Coast Guard College for its first twelve years. Afterwards he was a Professor at UBC.
