He was the second youngest of five children; Jean, Helen, Agnes, David and George. As this was more ranch country than farm land, the farm soon failed and Jim's family moved first to Saskatoon and then to the Chilliwack area in British Columbia. Jim had to leave school during the Great Depression to help support his family. He worked as a lumberjack and on dairy farms in the Fraser Valley. He also worked as a cowboy on a horse ranch in the Caribou Country. He returned to Saskatoon and worked first for a drycleaner and then obtained a job with the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1939 when war broke out he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army. When it was found he knew Morse Code he was transferred to the Navy where he served as a telegrapher on Corvettes and Destroyers until the end of the war. At that time, Jim returned to the Canadian Pacific Railway in Saskatoon. He married Gladys Olson in 1947 and they had two children; Jim and Helen. Jim was very involved with the Railway Workers Union for many years. He was the local president for 15 years and spent many years as a scout master. Jim was a Legion Member of Branch No. 362 in Saskatoon. He built his own house in Saskatoon and a cabin on Wakaw Lake. After retirement he spent his summers at the cabin or in his garden feeding the birds. In the winters, Jim and Gladys enjoyed traveling to Hawaii every year. He will be sadly missed.
