John Gerald Belliveau

BELLIVEAU, John Gerald - 79, Halifax, died April 3, 1996, in Victoria General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late John E. and Marie Elizabeth (Doucet) Belliveau. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas and College Street schools, high school at St. Mary's College High School and received his engineering diploma from St. Mary's College and his bachelor of engineering from Nova Scotia Technical College (Technical University of Nova Scotia) in 1939. He was employed by the Department of National Defence for 44 years which included five years with the RCAF and RCN. He held the position of Naval Works Officer, Atlantic Coast, and later Senior Staff Officer Construction, Maritime Command. After retiring from DND, he joined the consultant engineering firm of J. Philip Vaughan and Associates as an executive engineer. He was past president at Nova Scotia Technical College (TUNS), Alumni Association; past chairman at the Halifax branch, Engineering Institute of Canada; past councillor, Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and past member of the Board of Governors, Technical University of Nova Scotia. He was a member of a civic renewal committee set up by the mayor of Halifax which resulted in eleven city blocks that were demolished and replaced by Scotia Square apartment building complex. He was a life member of the Nova Scotia Association of Professional Engineers and the Engineering Institute of Canada. For his service to the nation, he was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967 and the Queen's 25th Anniversary Medal in 1977. He was a member of Canadian Martyrs Parish for many years, was chairman of the building committee for the parish hall and again for the church and glebe. He was a past president of the parish council. Surviving are his wife, the former Winnifred Giffin; son, Robert (Bob), daughter-in-law Susan, grandchildren, John, Anne-Marie, Julie, sisters, Annette (Mrs. A.J. Meagher), Marie, Claire, all of Halifax. He was predeceased by brothers, Bernard, John. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday in Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Monday in Canadian Martyrs' Church, Rev. Henry Kline officiating. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Donations to The Lung Association or any charity.
