In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
Charles (Joe) Prosser - He was skipper of the HMCS Oriole, after Ellsworth Coggins. He joined the RN at the beginning of the war after serving as a merchant marine captain. Joe was the sort of guy about whom legends were made. He was known for practical jokes and high spirits, but like Ellsworth he was a true sailor. He came from a well-off Newfoundland family. When he joined up, the naval recruiter did not ask him about his background and he was assigned as an ordinary seaman; he kept passing the tests for each gradation of seaman every other week until finally some officer asked about his experience. He was made an officer shortly thereafter. I think his name is on a memorial in Halifax but I do not have the reference. I do remember seeing it and feeling happy that he is formally remembered somewhere. (Submitted by Charles Quinn)
After his naval service he was appointed as a Captain in the US Merchant Marine and served as the Sailing Master & Waterfront Director of the US Merchant Marine Academy. (The Nauticapedia)
