PENNYCOOK, Gordon William (Gord) - of Daysland, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at the age of 76 years.

Gordon William Pennycook was the second son of seven children born September 12, 1946. He grew up on a farm near Carrot River, Saskatchewan. As early as 14 years of age, Gord knew he wasn’t going to be a farmer. He wanted to learn about mechanics and so, a few years later Grandpa and Gord decided it would be best if he left the farm and got a job. Gordon moved to southern Saskatchewan, close to his Uncle Bill, and obtained a job on Wells’ farm outside of Carnduff. It was in this area where he met the love of his life, Mary Carol Ann Douglas of Glen Ewen, Saskatchewan. Gord joined the Navy in August 1964 and hopped on the train heading for basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. January 1965 was the beginning of 39 months of tech school at Esquimalt on Vancouver Island. Obviously, Carol wasn’t letting Gord get away as she followed him to the island and convinced Gord that they needed to get married. Carol went back to Saskatchewan to plan the wedding and they were married April 7, 1966. Not long after, Constance Lynn arrived and in December 1967 Anthony Leigh showed up 3 months early. Gord transferred to the Bonaventure in Halifax, Nova Scotia and his family went with him to Dartmouth when Tony was strong enough to move. Gord was released in August 1971 and this is when he began his life in Alberta. The Pennycook’s moved five more times after arriving in Alberta; Cold Lake, Grand Centre, Grande Cache, Camrose, and finally ending up in Daysland for 37 years. Gord finished his working career and retired on their acreage close to Daysland. After one more move to Camrose, Gordon lost a very short battle to brain cancer and passed away peacefully with Carol by his side.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carol Pennycook of Camrose; children Connie (Geoff) Fleck of New Norway and Tony (Audrey) Pennycook of Red deer; five grandchildren Melissa (William), Jennifer (Geoffrey), Geoffrey (Kelsey), Brittany, and Alex (Zoe); seven great-grandchildren; and siblings Wayne (Val) Pennycook of Calgary, Ray Pennycook of Minnedosa, MB, Lorne (Margaret) Pennycook of Orleans, ON, Neil (Donna) Pennycook of Carrot River, SK, Lyle (Alice) Pennycook of Devon, and Lynn (Gord) Doerksen of Winnipeg, MB.

Gord was predeceased by his parents Robert and Muriel Pennycook.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 9, 2023 from the Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church, 5202 59 St Daysland officiated by Rev. Rob Johnson.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Gord's memory may be made to the Canadian cancer society, Royal Canadian Legion or to a charity of one’s choice. (Burgar Funeral Home)
