SMALLMAN, William Wilson - passed on September 7, 2023 in Toronto at the age of 100. Beloved husband of Lois Adeen Smallman (Dr. Lois Lloyd) for 46 years until her passing in 2006. Adored father of Anne (Timothy Gallagher) and Catherine (John Grant). Cherished grandfather "Poppy" of Connor, Claire and Carlyle Gallagher and Emma, Nicole and Elizabeth Grant. Predeceased by his sister, Marjory Kyle, her husband, Vernon and his brother-in-law, Dr. Ted Cross. He leaves his sister, Joan Cross and her family. He will be dearly missed by all the McCabe, Kerr and Lloyd relatives. A private family service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Bill was first educated at Allenby Junior Public School, Oriole Park Junior Public School and John Ross Robertson Junior Public School. He graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate in 1941. He graduated with a BA from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1948 and obtained an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1965. Before attending university, Bill served in WWII as a Naval Officer. After briefly practicing law, Bill chose to become an entrepreneur, owning several businesses in Ontario. He enjoyed being on the board of the Victoria Order of Nurses, Chairman of Teledyne Canada and President of the Toronto Branch of the Naval Association of Canada. He loved volunteering to serve young people and his community. In 1970 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Metropolitan Toronto YMCA and in 1972 became Vice President of the National Council of Canadian YMCAs. He made visits to Trinidad and Uganda to form partnerships and help develop the YMCA in those countries. He was a long-time member of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, being an usher on the centre aisle for more than 30 years. Beginning in 1984, Bill worked as chief fundraiser and Chairman for 14 years to revive, renew and sustain The Lake Joseph Community Church, Muskoka. As a young man, Bill was an avid sailor and a member of the RCYC. Bill also enjoyed summers at Camp Ahmic and later summered with his family in Muskoka, where he met his wife at the Elgin House ice cream parlour in the boathouse. He was a member of Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club where he enjoyed tennis. He was a champion Bridge player. Bill also enjoyed the community at the Granite Club. Bill was a gentleman with high expectations. He will be remembered for his commanding presence and that he was most comfortable in a navy-blue suit and tie. He was wise and gave good counsel. He was brave and a fighter, remaining so until the end. He did not want to leave. He attributed his longevity to his mental positivity, his sense of humour and his keen interest in his family. We will lovingly remember him and will miss him deeply. The family is grateful for the kindness, care and support Bill received from his dedicated personal caregivers and the St. Michael's Hospital Palliative Care Unit team. We will always remember Bill's famous last words "It's been an honour, a privilege and an unexpected pleasure". (The Globe and Mail 09 Sep 2023)
