CORMIER, Lorenzo Anthony (Tony) - Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sept 1, 2023, at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax. He was 93 years old and a longtime resident of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Tony was born in Amherst, NS, on July 13, 1930, to Joseph (Frank) and Mary (née Gaudet) Cormier. While attending high school, Tony met Benita whom he would later marry in 1953.Tony and Benny went on to have three sons, Kenneth, Stephen & Christopher and two grandchildren, Lauren and Jack. Tony joined the Canadian Air Cadets in the 1940’s. In 1947, he was part of a flying training program that was the first of its kind at that time. He flew a double-winged tiger moth airplane with an open cockpit. Tony used to joke that he looked like the Red Baron! After high school, Tony attended St. Francis Xavier University where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree. While there, he joined the University Naval Training Division and maintained an interest in the Canadian Naval Reserve for 25 years. Tony retired from the Navy in 1974 as Commanding Officer of HMCS Scotian. Before retiring from Scotian, Tony was appointed as an Honorary Aide de Camp to Canadian Governor General, Roland Michener, and Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor, Victor Oland. In addition to his naval pursuits, Tony had a successful career in business at Oland’s Breweries, reaching the position of Comptroller before retiring in 1995. Despite his busy schedule, Tony always found time to go sailing with friends, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Tony was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Benita and son, Stephen; his parents, and his sister, Yolande MacKenzie. He is survived by his sons, Kenneth (Patrice) of Calgary, AB, and Christopher (David) of Bedford, NY. He is also mourned by his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Cormier and Jack Marsh-Cormier. To respect his final wishes, Tony will be celebrated privately by close family and friends in the days ahead. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the IWK Foundation.
