William
(Billy) GARRETT was born in 1941, Ramsay, Isle of Mann. He
came to Canada with his family and attended public high school in North Bay,
Ontario. He joined the RCN at North Bay in 1959. He did not stay in
the military (RCN) for a long time and may have been on the three-year plan.
At some point he was working on vessels off the coast of Newfoundland. He
died in the sinking of the Schooner Delroy.
From the Maritime History Archive: July 27, 1972
- The Newfoundland schooner, “Delroy”, sank after a fire broke
out in the engine room, while on route from Merasheen Island in
Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, to Arnold’s Cove with 15 people on
board. Nine people died, including 3 children. On April 11, 2013, 41
years after the tragedy, Loyola Pomroy, who survived the sinking,
and Ray Berkshire, captain of the “Bertha Joyce”, were presented
with the Canadian Red Cross’s Rescuer Award, for their help in
saving 6 lives that night.
