Lawrence Tassian (Lonnie) White

Leading Seaman, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 1938          Died: 2023

WHITE, Lawrence Tassian (Lonnie) White - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Lawrence "Lonnie" Tassian White announce his unexpected and sudden passing at his residence in Truro at the age of 85 years.

Lonnie was born in St. George’s, Newfoundland and as a young man and explored several different jobs before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1961. The Royal Canadian Navy was a defining character for Lonnie who cherished the years he spent at sea on the HMCS Kootenay, HMCS Assiniboine, HMCS Skeena, HMCS Protecteur, and many other CFB postings.

As a young father Lonnie volunteered many hours to the Boy Scouts of Canada as Troop Leader. He is also remembered for his lifelong and loyal dedication to the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in many different executive Branch positions. He was an avid reader and souvenir pin collector and could often be heard asking when friends and family travelled to bring back a collectable pin. Several times a week Dad could be found among friends at the card table plying his trade as a skilled cribbage player. He was also a dedicated Toronto Blue Jays fan who collected memorabilia and never missed a game at 25 Windsor Way. Lonnie could often be seen driving around Truro on his mobility scooter enjoying life claiming that at 80 he was "still young" in his eyes. We are grateful for the many friends at 25 Windsor Way whose companionship he cherished.

Lonnie will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Sherree White; and children, Brian (Jacqueline), Rowena (Mike) O’Neil, Jacqueline (Ken) Lecky; grandchildren, Cassandra, Emma, Owen, Wilson, and Griffin. He was predeceased by his son, Keith B. White; sister, Rowena Webb; brother, Brendon White; and parents, Robert and Mildred White.

Dad was not sentimental or emotional about his own mortality and to honour his specific request there will be no visitation or funeral. As a true sailor, later this year his ashes will be laid to rest through the Royal Canadian Navy’s Committal of Ashes to Sea Ceremony. In Lonnie’s memory, donations can be made to your local Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.  (Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, Truro, NS)
