SWAN, Samuel - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father Samuel Swan, 84, of Dartmouth, on October 18, 2023.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 28, 1939, Sam was the oldest son of James and Annie (Longmuir) Swan. The family moved to Canada in 1947 and settled in Hamilton, Ont. At the tender age of 17, in July of 1956, Sam enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and became an Aviation Systems Technician. He spent his 33-year military career at his one and only posting: Shearwater, N.S. Some of Sam’s deployments included the HMCS Bonaventure, the HMCS Preserver and the HMCS Protecteur.

Sam's love for sports included playing hockey and football for the Shearwater Flyers, coaching the Shearwater Flyers football team and the Dartmouth High Spartan football team, leading them to victory in the provincial championship. You could also hear Sam cheering for his favorite teams; the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Toronto Blue Jays who he continued to support through heir less than stellar seasons.

Sam was very proud of his bevy of Swan’s and is survived by his children, Cheryl (Vaughan), Lake Echo; Stephen (Tanya), Greenwood; and Bryan (Angela), Cole Harbour; grandchildren, Heather (Spencer), Brian (Kelsey), Jacob and Isaiah; great-grandchildren, Mariah, Candace, Atli, and Everly. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn, Glasgow, Scotland; and brother, James, Glasgow, Scotland; and niece, Tricia (Wayne); nephew, Robert (Ali).
