In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
My father never talked much about the war, like so many men and women who served. I recall my father saying that when the war ended the Strathadam was on patrol in the Irish Sea. He had some photos of surrendered U-boats tied up to the Strathadam. He was a helmsman aboard the Strathadam and part of the boarding crew accepting the surrender of the U-boats. He told me it was rather unnerving to see so many U-boats surface in close proximity to their patrol. They were so many of them all around them. The U-boats just reeked down below he said. He was a very good friend of one of the crewmen killed in the “Hedgehog explosion incident”. I think he was from Fort William, Ontario. His name was Harold Jones. My father was a member of Branch 5 Royal Canadian Legion, serving in their Colour Party for many years. (Written by Gary Schmidt Jr)
