They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
MCBRIDE, John Lytle, AB, V45461, RCNVR, killed - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN - son of W. P. and Sadie McBride.
AB McBride died when his ship, HMCS ATHABASKAN G07, was sunk in the English Channel on April 29, 1944. His body was recovered and he was buried in the Plouescat Communal Cemetery, Finistere, France.
Able Seaman John Lytle McBride son of Mrs. W. P. McBride and the late Mr. McBride of Winnipeg, who was reported missing while serving with HMCS ATHABASKAN, is now officially reported dead, according to word received by his mother. Born and educated in Winnipeg, he attended Earl Grey and Kelvin high schools. Prior to enlistment he was employed by Holt Renfrew. He enlisted with RCNVR in March, 1942. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. H. Begg, Mrs. Fred Howard, and Helen at home: also two brothers, PO. Gordon, with the RCAF at Boundary Bay, Vancouver, and Pte. Ralph, serving overseas.
