COULTER, Elmer Ira - 80, Debert, Nova Scotia, formerly of Dieppe, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, March 14, 2010, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born February 25, 1930, in Six Mile Road, Wallace, NS, he was the son of the late Ira and Ethel (Crooks) Coulter.
During the late 1940’s and early 1950’s Elmer served as Radar Technician for the Canadian Navy and worked at Camp Borden, Ontario. In 1955 he began his 32 year career at CN Railway working as a fireman, shipping clerk and retiring as a payroll clerk in 1987. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 106 Debert. Elmer loved animals, the outdoors and the recounting of a good tale. He was well loved by all and will be missed by his family, many friends, and his cats Mitts and Blackie.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Norma (Haywood Lewis); his children, Willard (Carolyn), Cascumpec, PEI; Garth (Joanne), Dieppe, NB, Sandra McLaren (Randy), Wilmot, NS; David, Fort Saskatchewan, AB; Karen Tulkens (Mike) Bridgewater, NS; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Freda DeYoung (Malcolm).
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Elmer’s family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010 and where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010, Reverend Don MacQueen officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Middle Road Cemetery, Debert. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Elmer’s memory to the Colchester County SPCA are welcomed.
