WEDDING BELLS - Bowen-Smith ~ Shoop - A wedding of dominion-wide interest was that solemnized at four thirty o'clock, Sunday afternoon at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church when Miss Lucille Elizabeth Shoop, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Albert Shoop became the bride of Petty Officer Leonard Bowen-Smith, formerly of Regina, now of Bridgewater, N.S., the son of Mr. Sydney C. Smith and the late Mrs. Smith of Camloops, B.C.
To the strains of the wedding processional played by Mrs. Ross Cook, the bride entered the church with her brother Petty Officer Gordon Shoop, R.C.N.V.R. Dr. S. Spidell, supplying clergyman officiated at the single ring ceremony.
The bride was beautifully attired in a floor length gown of white point d'esprit with bodice of cluny lace fashioned with short puff sleeves. The flowing skirt was piped with gold thread which was accentuated by old sandals and a corsage bouquet of golden bronze talisman roses. A sheer white halo hat completed the costume. The groom wore the uniform of the R.C.N.
Out-of-town guests at the wedding include Mrs. C. W. Latter of Bridgewater, sister of the groom, Mr. Latter and son; Anna Churchill, Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Petite. Mrs. R. E. Corkum, Echo Bay.
Following the ceremony a reception was held in the private dining room of the Royal Hotel, Mahone Bay. The toast to the bride was proposed by Mr. Latter, brother-in-law of the groom. After the reception the bridal couple left by automobile for a honeymoon trip through the Valley towns. For travelling the bride wore a gown of leaf green crepe with white accessories. Before her marriage Mrs. Bowen-Smith was employed with the local branch of the Maritime Telephone Company. Possessing a fine soprano voice she was a former member of the Lunenburg Glee Club and of St. Andrew's Church Choir. She was the first Lunenburg girl to be heard over the air, having sung from a New York studio several years ago.
During the time that Petty Officer Bowen-Smith, R.C.N.V.R., is on active service, Mrs. Bowen-Smith will reside in Lunenburg. (Wednesday, August 5th, 1942 Lunenburg Progress Enterprise page 8 // Researched by George Newbury)
