BARSS, Walter Charles, ERA 3c, A/2516, RCNR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of Walter D. and Edna E. Barss, of Sydney River, Nova Scotia. Husband of Mary Anita Barss, of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
ERA Barss died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
Walter C. Barss was born on March 19, 1919. He attended the Sydney Schools and graduated from the Academy in June 1935. He spent two years at Mt. Allison University, where he took a course in Marine Engineering. On leaving Mt. Allison, he went to sea with his father, serving in the Merchant Navy until 1941 when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He was lost his life in the English Channel, while serving on H.M.C.S. Alberni. His parents are Mr. Walter Barss and the late Mrs. Barss of Sydney River, Cape Breton, N.S.
