HAMMOND, John Andrew, Sto 1c, V60632, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of Wilfred Norton Hammond and Irene Lillian Hammond, of London, Ontario.

 

Stoker Hammond Signalman Graham died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.

 

He attended Brick Street Public School, Odell Public School, Victoria Public School and H. B .Beal Technical School.

HMCS PREVOST - Enlisted 10 May 1943. Commenced Active Service 14 May 1943 as a Stoker 2nd Class, RCNVR

HMCS CORNWALLIS - Drafted to CORNWALLIS 31 May 1943

HMCS STADACONA - Drafted to STADACONA 31 Jul 1943

HMCS YORK - Drafted to YORK 02 Sep 1943.  While drafted to YORK he attended an 8 week Motor Operator course at Danforth Technical School that commenced 07 Sep 1943.
