In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SUTHERLAND, Donald Stewart (Suds) - Born in Selmah, Nova Scotia to Alexander and Edith (Hamilton) on New Year’s Day, 1928 and passed away after a lengthy illness on May 5, 2017 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Donald spent thirty years with the Canadian Armed Forces, joining the Royal Canadian Navy in July 1945 before transferring into the Royal Canadian Air Force. After he retired, Donald settled in Rhodes Corner, Lunenburg County where he spent much of his time being active with the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 24, Bridgewater, where we served as President in 1990-1991.
He is survived by his life partner, Gladys Conrad of Dartmouth; his three children, daughter, Sherry Eyman (John) of Hebbville; son, Ken (Jean) of Kingston, Ontario; son, Thorne (Patti) of Lunenburg; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother Marvin Sutherland of Guelph, Ontario; sister, Beatrice Fairweather, Moncton.; He was predeceased by wife Shirley (Shand); sisters, Edla Owen of Dartmouth, Doris MacPhee of Upper Nine Mile River; and brother Gerald Sutherland. Special thanks to Gladys’ daughter-in-law Sandra Lohnes, his private care givers, Dee, Vi and Phylis, the staff at Carter Senior Care of Dartmouth and to the palliative care team at Dartmouth General Hospital for making his final days comfortable.
Public graveside and legion tribute will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, June 24 in Hebbville Cemetery, Hebbville. Chaplain Willis Ott officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SHAID Animal Shelter. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. (Sweeny's Funeral Home)
