BABIUK, Andrew Ivan, AB.LM1, 58679, RCN, Died - 29 Sep 1965, HMCS CAPE SCOTT
Babiuk, Andrew Ivan - Accidentally drowned on September 29, 1965 in Plymouth, England, Mr. Andrew Babiuk aged 22 years beloved son of Mrs. Katherine Kuzyk of 541 Magnus Avenue. Requiem High Mass was sung 10 a.m. Tuesday (today) in St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, Stella and McGregor Street, Msgr. W. Kushner will officiate followed by interment in All Saints Cemetery. Mr. Babiuk was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and for the past 3 years was an Able Seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Katherine Kuzyk of Winnipeg. Summary of BOI report - AB Babiuk disappeared from HMCS Cape Scott on the night of 29 Sep 1965 after having been ashore with shipmates and had been drinking. He had returned to the ship on his own, but needed help boarding the ship via the very steep brow. The QM judged that Babiuk did not need any assistance to get to his bunk. He was last seen between 2230 and 2315 on the upper deck. He was reported missing from hands fall-in at 0755. His bunk had not been slept in. Ship's divers and an operational diving team conducted surface and underwater searches. Searches continued over a period of two days without finding his body.
Following the departure of HMCS CAPE SCOTT, AB Babiuk's remains were recovered and positively identified on 8/9 Oct 1965. AB Babiuk's body was repatriated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for burial.
