FRASER, Douglas Joseph (Doug) - It is with broken hearts that the family of Douglas Joseph Fraser of Dartmouth, NS announce the unexpected passing of our kind, brave and caring husband, father, grandfather, (Gramps) brother, uncle and friend. Doug was born in Halifax, NS on October 5th, 1958 as the cherished son of the late Donald W. Fraser (originally from Antigonish, NS) and mother, Mary Theresa Fraser (Meade) originally of Canso, NS. Doug passed in the early hours of Friday, February 2nd, 2024 following a short and courageous battle to recover from surgery to repair his heart.
As he was in life, Doug was surrounded by his loving family during his battle and as he passed.
Though our tears we sent him with our love and through our hugs we supported one another.
Doug leaves behind his cherished wife of 34 years, Maria Fraser (Kimball) of Dartmouth, his daughter, Erin Naugler (Sheldon Hope) of Falmouth, NS and son, Michael Latter of Halifax.
When Doug chose Maria as his wife, he also chose to be a Dad to her two children who quickly taught him the joys and trials of parenting. Together they learned and loved and grew. He was our hero and protector and no one loved more fiercely than Doug did.
He is also survived by his five (5) children, Jacob Naugler (22), Ella Naugler (20), Carter Naugler (17), Claire Naugler (17) all of Falmouth, NS and Jackson Edward Latter (11) of Lower Sackville, NS all of whom he would follow to the ends of the earth. They were his pride and joy and he loved them all dearly. In truth, they were his hero's and he was theirs.
Doug also leaves behind his bereaved siblings, sisters, Lauretta Fraser (formerly Thompson) of Dartmouth, Donna Shantz (Jack) of Scarborough, ON, Mary Rita Kimball (Mike) of Truro, NS, Patricia Fraser of Belleville, ON and brother, John Fraser of Dartmouth.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who he loved to make laugh.
Doug's earliest years were spent in Canso, NS. He went to high school in Toronto and Belleville, ON where he loved playing football and went on to be a life long fan of the game. (Go Giants)!
After
high school Doug served in the Royal Canadian Navy for a short time before
going to Loyalist College where he got his first Electronic Technician
degree.
He remained there for several years where he worked for a little start up known as Hewlett-Packard where he made many friends and sowed his wild oats. Woohoo, young, single and free!
In 1986 the party was over and he moved back to Nova Scotia, where his parents lived, to cool his heels! He met a young (ish) lady on the back step of his apartment building and carried her garbage to the dumpster. The ink was dry! Dartmouth was now his life long home.
Doug loved to play sports and loved to talk about them too! In his early years he had a passion for slow pitch baseball and played from the time he arrived in Dartmouth at 27 until he was 60!
He loved the camaraderie, the friendships and of course, the beers in the parking lot after the game.
He
also played a little golf and took great pleasure in going to
"guys" annual trip to PEI and the shenanigans that ensued. Known
to his good friends as "Stocky" Doug, the gang (originally the
A-Team) were big gamers. Washer toss, bag toss, numerous board games and
card games and maybe a few coins passed hands.
After graduating he made a 30 year career in the Electronics field at DRS Pivotal Power where he worked as Technical Support Lead. Doug became a part of the company family and was highly thought of (even though he was known to speak his mind). He will be missed by many at DRS.
A Celebration of Life Reception will be held on Friday, February 9th from 2-4 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth. Please join the family in remembering Doug and bring your smiles and nicknames.
