In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar

George Carrington Platter

Sub-Lieutenant (Pilot), RCN

Born: 17 Oct 1934, Forest, Ontario

Died: 08 Feb 2024, Halifax, Nova Scotia

PLATER, George Carrington - was born in Forest, Ontario to the late Beatrice (Carrington) and George Henry Plater. George lived most of his adult life in Nova Scotia, calling Brooklyn and his beloved farm, home for more than 40 years.

Until the very end, George had the heart of a traveller. His adventures began at 18 when he joined the Canadian Navy where he trained as a helicopter pilot. After the Navy, he went on to serve as the supervisor of the helicopter division of the Canadian Coast Guard/Department of Transportation based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia until retirement.

Serving onboard ships at sea for many days, George perfected his skills as a master bridge player. He simply couldn’t be beat. He loved gardening, reading, and meeting new people.

A gifted story teller, George would keep his children and grandchildren spellbound for hours with entertaining tales about his many navy and coast guard adventures.

George was predeceased by his older brother Terry Bridgeman, sister-in-law Betty Bridgeman, and brother-in-law Peter Weir.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sylvia (nee Weir), sons Andrew (Mariane) and Joel (Angela), as well as grandchildren Kristin, Ethan, Maxime, Emilie, and Annabelle.

The family would like to extend to the incredible staff at Veterans' Memorial Hospital a heartfelt thank you for the years of tender care they provided for George. They made “Camp Hill” a home for his final years rather than a hospital stay.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Donations can be made to a charity of choice.
