RCN

Born: 05 Mar 1932, Toronto, Ontario

Died: 16 Mar 2024, Halifax, Nova Scotia

MacLEOD, Gordon Bruce (Spook) - It is with great sadness, yet joyful hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, that the family of Gordon “Spook” MacLeod announces his passing in Halifax at the age of 92 years and 11 days, after many years of living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Gordon was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 5, 1932, the son of Philip Fraser MacLeod and Irene Hilda (nee Anderson) MacLeod, one of seven sons, of which Gordon was the last surviving. He was predeceased by his parents and his four older brothers: Ken, Don, Bob, and Doug; as well as his two younger brothers, Norm and David.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Helene (nee Robitaille) MacLeod; daughter Chris (David) Seaboyer, Dartmouth; two sons, Bruce (Maryam), Vancouver, and Andrew (Marianne), London, Ontario; as well as his dear brother-in-law Mike of Madoc, Ontario.

Gordon is also survived by his six beloved grandsons Sean, Chester Basin; Justin (Erin), Dartmouth; Daniel (Maddy), Hohenstein, Germany; Nick (Lilly), St. Lazare, Quebec; Connor (Alanah), Los Angeles; and Brandon, of Victoria, British Columbia. He had eight great-grandchildren, Beth, Seth, Simon, Emmy, Rosie, Ally, Ryan and Brie; three step-great-grandchildren, Kate, Alex and Brooklyn; as well as two great-great-grandsons, Jayce Gordon (his namesake) and Isaac.

Gordon was a man who loved and served not only his family, but also his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In so many ways, Gordon ministered in his former church over the past twenty-five years, not least of which was in singing praises to his God and King. Even into his 90’s, Gordon was noted for having a remarkably beautiful singing voice…and an unusually quick wit!

He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1951 and proudly served his monarch and country for twenty years. In the RCN, he played for the Shearwater Flyers football team, earning fame for his remarkable speed and agility on the gridiron, which gave him the nickname of “Spook”.

In 1957, Gordon and the Flyers became national champions. In the 1960’s, he went on to coach the Flyers; and (in the 1970’s) coached the Saint Mary’s University Huskies as an assistant coach, which went on to win the 1973 Vanier Cup.

Memorial Service will be held 2pm March 23, 2024 at A.L Mattatall Funeral Home 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth with a reception following the service.

Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society; or to Seaside FM, a radio-station of which Gordon was a devoted fan. (Dignity Memorial)
