CHALMERS, George Anderson, L/Sig, V23121, RCNVR, MPK - 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Roland John Anderson Chalmers and Sissy Ann Chalmers, of Verdun, Quebec. Husband of Carol Olivia Sherwood Chalmers, of Victoria, British Columbia.
Leading Signalman Chalmers died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors.
Leading Signalman George Anderson Chalmers, age 29, according to word received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Roland John Anderson Chalmers of 5912 Bannantyne Avenue, Verdun, Québec, has lost his life in the sinking of H.M.C.S. Shawinigan. His wife the former Carole Boyer lives in Victoria B.C. Leading Signalman Chalmers was educated at Lachine High School and was employed by T. Eaton Company Ltd., before enlisting in 1940. A younger brother, John, is recovering from wounds in England received while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada in France.
