FIANDER, Edgar Lincoln, Sto PO, A1883, RCNR, MPK - 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Thomas Lincoln Fiander and Mary Ellen Fiander, of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia; husband of Grace M. Fiander, of Sudbury, Ontario.
Stoker Po Fiander died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors.
Petty Officer Edgar L. Flander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Flander, was listed as missing after the sinking of the Corvette Shawinigan. After leaving High School, Edgar was employed with the S. & L. Railway. He left Glace Bay for the Canadian West about fifteen years ago and took up residence in Sudbury, Ontario. He was employed on the Great Lakes boats prior to his enlistment in the R.C.N. in May 1940. Until his death he served continuously in the North Atlantic.
