In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MERRITT, Dorothy (Dot) (née HANSON) - Dot was born in Munson in 1932; her father Harry Hanson had established the family farm there. Soon after his death the family moved to Drumheller. It was in Drumheller where Dot completed school. Soon after she decided to “see the world” and she joined the Royal Canadian Navy, as one of the first Wrens. In the navy she met her lifelong partner Don Merritt. They moved back to the Drumheller Valley in 1961, and soon established one of Drumheller’s most successful businesses. Over the years, Dot was involved with many organizations, the Curling Club, the Golf Course, the Figure Skating Club, the Legion, and the Elks Club. As business owners, all charities and local programs were sponsored by both Dot and Don. Dot fought a long and hard battle against cancer over many years; unfortunately this was one battle she could not win. Dot is survived by her daughter Denny, her brother Bert Hanson (and family), her brother Gordon Hanson (and family), the grand-doggies Angel and Little Bean. A memorial will be held at a later date.
A Celebration of Dot Merritt’s life will be on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. At Courtney-Winters Funeral Home, Drumheller, Alberta, with Jan Richardson officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alberta Cancer Foundation-Tom Baker Cancer Center 1331-29 Street N.W. Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403-823-2666). (The Drumheller Mail 19 Jan 2012)
