In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PORTER, James (Jim) - 84, of Conquerall Mills, died May 21, 2024, while surrounded by his immediate family and under the compassionate care of the health professionals at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born and raised in Bridgewater, he was the youngest son of the late Glenn Parker Porter of Wolfville and Nedra (Rhodenizer) Porter Marshall of Dayspring.
After a wonderful childhood which produced several lifelong friends in Bridgewater and Green Bay, Jim joined the Navy as an electrician while attending Bridgewater High School and went on to complete his GED. With two years of service completed, Jim was surprised to learn he wasn't cut out for life under a "Chain of Command" like his big brothers, and he applied for an early release to pursue higher education at Acadia University. Jim completed his university tour after just one year, managing a certificate of achievement in their less known (but very prestigious), whiskey and cribbage program! Jim was off to take on the world, and what an adventure he made of it. Over the next decades, Jim's professions included crew on the Bluenose II, lineman for Nova Scotia Power, electrical buyer with Michelin Tire, Manager at Harris & Roome Electrical Supply, and eventually working in Advanced Education and Training with the Nova Scotia Community College.
While all this was impressive to some, Jim would tell everyone the accomplishment he was most proud of was that of raising his three sons. Everyone who knew Jim can tell you his boys were always paramount in his life- closely followed by his beloved cats. Jim is survived by his sons, Jonathan (Nancy) Porter, Conquerall Mills; Stefan (Tracey) Porter, Conquerall Mills and Andrew (Francesca Bray) Porter, Conquerall Mills; grandchildren, Ashton Porter, Shelburne and Sarah Porter, Barrhaven, ON; brother, Wayne (Betty) Porter, Dayspring; several nieces and nephews and his cherished Siamese companions, Larry, and Dixie. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his stepfather, Arnold Lovett Marshall, formerly of South Range; brother, Glenn "Jack" Porter, formerly of Black Point and one nephew.
In accordance with Jim's wishes, a Celebration of Life for family and his many close friends will take place at 'Porter's Mountain' on the afternoon of Saturday the 6th of July 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal shelter of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. (Sweeny's Funeral Home)
Remembering Jim: Jim and I travelled from Halifax to Cornwallis on the bus. There was a pit stop at Lawrencetown for eats but it was crowded, so Jim and I went to his friends place further out. We ended up missing the bus so Jim's friend drove us to Cornwallis. The Parade GI wasn't impressed at all and wanted to know why we weren't on the bus. Jim, good olde buddy, talked us out of that one. (Submitted by George Newbury)
