In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PHILLIPS, Paul Richard - born Toronto, was the much loved chosen son of Louise (nee Shepherd) and Harold Phillips. He spent early years with his parents and brother (Donald), school-aged years with his maternal grandparents, then with his father and stepmother, Irene. At 17 he found his calling, leaving school for the Canadian Navy. Paul served on many ships including HMCS La Hulloise (first and favorite), Magnificent, Restigouche, Annapolis, Bonaventure, Protecteur, Fraser, and Assiniboine. He married Rosemarie (nee Metzler; Halifax) in 1954. They had three daughters and lived a naval family life, moving between Halifax, Montreal, Victoria, Saint John, and Bermuda, making wonderful friends. They always returned to Halifax, home base. Paul took his officer's commission in 1969. He was frequently at sea, with service in Egypt, Cyprus, and the Canadian Arctic. In retirement, Paul spent happy years with partner, Marina Ivimey and her family who provided invaluable support in his later years. Paul was easy-going and well-loved. He was an avid reader, with a dry sense of humor passed on to his daughters. He served as the performance liaison for the Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Paul was an enthusiastic athlete who played hockey, football, squash, golf, and siding and refereed university football. He volunteered at the Veterans' Memorial Hospital, bringing Tattoo, his beloved golden retriever. Paul is predeceased by his parents, brother, and partner Marina. He leaves his former wife, Rosemarie; daughters, Paulette Phillips (Michael Buchannan) Toronto, Cynthia Phillips, Halifax, and Natalie Phillips (Richard Roberts) Montreal, stepchildren in Hali-fax, Rob (Colleen) and Karla Ivimey; and grandchildren, Diego Phillips Shea, Lucca Phillips-Roberts, and Maggie, Alex, and Thomas Ivimey. We thank the staff at Parkland Clayton Park. There will be a private gathering for family. (The Saltwire Network 19 Apr 2024)
