In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HIRTLE, Murray Frank - age 30, of Mahone Bay, passed away here after a lengthy illness which he bore with great patience. He was born in Mahone Bay, third son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H.G. Hirtle. He attended Acadia University for one year, then entered the navy where he served until the end of World War II. Returning to Acadia, he graduated with a BA degree. While at Acadia he was interested in sports and was a member of the Varsity football team. He was Past President of the Canadian Legion, No. 49; a member of the Board of Trade and a Kiwanian. For a time he was manager of Hirtle's Dry Goods at Mahone Bay, and later travelled for Lewis Ltd., Truro. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lecky, of Summerside, P.E.I.; two sons, Geoffrey and Barry; two sisters, Beatrice (Mrs. William Bayley), Winchester, Mass.; Muriel (Mrs. Murray Webber), Longueril, Quebec; and two brothers, Curtis and William, both of Halifax. He was highly esteemed throughout the entire district. Evidence of the widespread sorrow at his passing was given by the large attendance at his funeral held June 17 in the Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The floral tributes, many and beautiful, gave added proof of the widespread sympathy extended. The service was conducted by the Rev. Ken Thompson, assisted by the Rev. E.L. Parsons, of St. James Anglican Church. Members of the Canadian Legion marched in a body and conducted the service at the grave. Interment was in Park Cemetery.
