In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BURT, George Thomas (Tom) - It is with great sadness the family of George Thomas "Tom" Burt announce his death, at South Shore Regional Hospital, on April 30, 2024.
After a long illness, Tom, aged eighty-five, died peacefully, with loved ones by his side.
Tom was the beloved husband of Ellen; father of Christine McEvoy (Sooke, BC), grandfather of Stephanie St. Germain and great-grandfather of Lucas St. Germain (also of Sooke). His stepsons, Paul Johnson (Vancouver, BC), Christopher Johnson (Victoria, BC), and step-grandson, Lennie (also of Victoria), are also saddened by his passing.
He will be greatly missed by his sisters, Helen McMullin (North Sydney, NS), and Diane Guidduci (Stony Creek, ON).
Tom is pre-deceased by his sister Glenda Lunn (Liverpool, NS), and brother Roger Sayer (Niagara Falls, ON).
We remember Tom as a kind, loving, and wise man, who touched the hearts of all who knew him well. His humour and wit, as well as his many acts of kindness, are fondly recalled, especially by his family.
Tom joined the Canadian Navy at a very young age, serving in HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Shearwater, and HMCS Bonaventure, as well as others. After leaving the Navy, Tom trained as a millwright, and after gaining experience at a variety of companies in Ontario and in Prince George, BC, he moved to the lower mainland of BC, where he continue his career in maintenance management at Freybe's Meats, The Great Little Box Company, and Yves Cuisine, among others.
After his retirement, Tom longed to live in the Maritimes, so in 2001, he and Ellen bought their home on Shore Drive, where they have greatly enjoyed their beautiful surroundings, and especially getting to know so many wonderful friends in their small community of Conquerall Bank. Not quite as ready to retire as he thought, Tom worked for a while at Gow's Home Hardware in Bridgewater. He also was active as a volunteer, giving freely of his time to South Shore Regional Hospital Palliative Care, and the Heart Health Program sponsored by the YMCA.
Tom was a creative person and spent many hours in his workshop; there, in recent years, he taught himself to use a lathe, creating lovely wooden forms, each one a unique shape and design.
Tom loved his home and its view of the LaHave River, his barn/ workshop, and the quiet, fulfilling life he pursued in his retirement.
"Goodbye to the life I used to live, and the world I used to know. And kiss the hills for me, just once - then - I am ready to go." - excerpt from Emily Dickinson's "Tie the Strings to My Life, My Lord"
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. (The Lighthouse Now 30 Apr 2024)
