MURRAY, Glenn Stewart, Sto 1c, V55059, RCNVR, MPK - 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Roderick J. and Irene L. Murray, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Stoker Murray died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors. Murray Lake in Manitoba (near God's Lake Narrows) was named after him in 1995.
Stoker Glenn Stewart Murray younger son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Murray of Winnipeg, who was previously, reported missing at sea, when H.M.C.S. Shawinigan was reported lost November 24, 1944 has now been officially presumed dead. He was born in Strathclair, Manitoba in 1925 and attended school at Middle church, Manitoba and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg. He enlisted with the R.C.N.V.R. in March, 1943 and received his training at H.M.C.S. Chippawa, Toronto, Deep Brook and Halifax. He served on a British Destroyer and went on to H.M.C.S. Shawinigan in April 1944. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. R. A. Davies and Mrs. L. C. Sanders, and a brother Sgt. Rodney, serving overseas. Stoker 1 Glenn S. Murray of Winnipeg was 19 years of age.
