On December 6, 1917, when SS Imo and Mont- Blanc collided in the Halifax harbour and exploded, HMCS NIOBE was in the path of the explosion and the upper deck caught on fire. In order to save the ship, the crew was ordered to throw everything on fire overboard! These brass name plates are from the bottoms of sailor's duffle / ditty bags and were discovered several years ago during construction work around the Halifax Dockyard.
