BRIAND, Daniel Robert Allan - a cherished husband, father, and dedicated Canadian, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the Cowichan District Hospital, at the age of 79.
Born on September 2, 1944, in Montreal, Quebec, Danny was the eldest of ten children. His journey began early, with a commitment to service that lasted a lifetime. On August 15, 1964, at the age of 19, he embarked on a distinguished 35-year career with the Royal Canadian Navy. His naval service was marked by a deep sense of pride and adventure, as he sailed aboard several esteemed ships, including the HMCS Restigouche, HMCS St. Laurent, HMCS Fraser, HMCS Yukon, HMCS Qu’appelle, HMCS Chignecto, HMCS Cowichan, HMCS Terra Nova, and HMCS Huron. Danny often delighted in recounting that he had circumnavigated the globe three times during his naval career. He retired in 1993 with the esteemed rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class.
Following his retirement, Danny’s vibrant spirit led him to new adventures. He ran a hardware store, explored gold mining in the Yukon, worked on a pipeline in Alberta, and took on teaching roles before settling into retirement in Shawnigan Lake, BC. His boundless energy and zest for life were evident in all his pursuits.
Danny is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Linda; his sons, Niles (Stephanie) and Ian; his brother Rene and Terry; and his sisters Patsy, Julie, Marlene, Diana, and Angela. He was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Lucy; his sister Marvel; and his brother Clyde (Dee Dee).
A Celebration of Life will be held in Danny's honor at 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at the Royal Canadian Legion BR 134, 1625 Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road, Shawnigan Lake, BC.
Danny’s legacy of service, love, and adventurous spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
