GILES, Douglas Herbert - Dominion Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 34 Orillia. Royal Canadian Navy Chief CPO1/ CW01, Second World War Veteran. Born in Sebright, ON. Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friend Padre Gerry McMillian on Monday, March 5, 2018 in his 95th year. Douglas Giles, beloved husband of the late Ola Elva (Collins); mother of his children, Patricia Black (Wayne), Gordon (Peggy), Louise Taylor (Gordon predeceased), Reginald, Florence Giles, Marilyn Williams (Shawn) and Benjamin. Survived by his siblings, Eileen McGarvey, Donald Giles and William Giles. Predeceased by his brothers, Benjamin Giles, Albert Giles; grandson, Matthew Giles; second wife, Gladys McDonald; third wife, Audrey Hall; and long-time friend, Betty Johnson. Will be missed by 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Veteran’s Affairs, Dr. Tibor Harmathy, the nurses of Bayshore, CCAC, and the PSW’S from Care Partners. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 8th, in Mundell Funeral Home 79 West St. N., Orillia, Ont., at 2 o’clock. Memorial Donations to The Salvation Army or Legion Poppy Fund would be gratefully appreciated.

 


 

Douglas joined the RCNVR shortly after his 18th birthday at HMCS Prevost and was placed on active duty in April of 1942. In 1943 he was loaned to the Royal Navy as an E.R.A. and saw duty on HMS King George V during which time they transported Winston Churchill home from Gibraltar. He was then assigned to HMS Chiddingfold from 1944 - 1945 and saw duty off Italy where the ship was part of a flotilla firing star shells to illuminate targets for the bombing runs. In 1947 he released from the navy at HMCS Prevost but re-enlisted in 1952 and served an additional 21 years in the RCN.

 

Medals and awards: 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence of Britain, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar, War Medal 1939-1945, Special Service Medal and Bar (NATO/OTAN), Canadian Centennial Medal 1967, Canadian Forces Decoration with Bar.
