HOBBS, Peter - was born in Bokinicze, Poland now Belarus on 11 July 1923 to Paul Spakowsky and Paulina Spakowsky nee Stojan. He emigrated to Canada in 1929. He was raised by Ken Hobbs and Huldah Hobbs nee Revington on a farm near Denfield, Middlesex County, Ontario. Peter enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on 20 March 1944. Peter spent most of the war on the HMCS Sea Cliff in the North Atlantic. He also served on the HMCS San Peur, HMCS Uganda and HMCS Mic Mac. The Sea Cliff was part of the convoys that escorted ships across the Atlantic. On 27 December 1944, HMCS Sea Cliff, HMCS Edmundson and HMCS St Thomas were involved with the sinking of the U-boat U877. All aboard the U-boat were saved and taken aboard the ships. For his war service, Peter was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the CVSM and Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. Peter stayed in the Navy after the war and was part of a Good Will Tour by the Canadian Navy. The tour travelled on the HMCS Uganda to Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil in South America, the Falkland Islands, Mexico, Trinidad, Panama, USA and Canada. Peter was discharged in November 1950. He moved to London, Middlesex County where he married June Leach and had two children, Janis and Michael. He was employed as a purchaser at Hobbs Hardware, a wholesale hardware store. Peter and June retired to Forest, Ontario. Peter died September 7, 2007. He is memorialized at Beechwood Cemetery in Forest but his ashes were buried at sea by the Royal Canadian Navy.
