PARTNER, Peter Richard - Born on May 11 1933 in Alston in northern England, Peter Richard Partner led an extraordinary life. He migrated to St Johns Newfoundland during world war 2 with his parents Leslie and Emily, then survived smallpox as a teenager before entering memorial university to study law while his parents moved to Africa to teach.

Peter joined the military and rose through the ranks to end his career as Judge Advocate General for the Canadian Armed Forces . Throughout his career he and his wife Barbara raised 4 children as they enjoyed postings in Tanzania, Rome and Germany. Divorced in 1978, he met the love of his life Margita, who he adored unreservedly until her death in 2021.

Peter was an utterly charming man whose love of the English language was coupled with an incisive wit and an infectious chortle. He loved to discuss world events and was an avid follower of technology, though he refused to use any of it. His interest in where words came from was matched only by his love of slightly off color limericks.

Peter, this one is for you

Some say that old Pete is a pest

But I say with nary a jest

That he's funny and smart

Has the world's biggest heart

And to us is simply the best

(The Ottawa Citizen 30 Aug 2024)
