GALLAGHER, Howard Joseph, LS LR III, 3596, RCN, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of Edward Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Gallagher, of Melville, Saskatchewan; husband of Kathleen Gladys Gallagher, of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

 

Leading Seaman Howard Joseph Gallagher was the only son of Edward Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Brierley) Gallagher and left a wife Kathleen Gladys and daughter Catherine Florence at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Howard was born at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and educated at Melville and was a student prior to enlisting on January 15, 1940 at Esquimalt, British Columbia as a seaman boy.

 

LS Gallagher died when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors.
