HEIBERG, Kenneth Gordon, PO, 2599, RCN, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of Morris and Julia Heiberg, of Lang, Saskatchewan; husband of Mary Gertrude Heiberg, of Vancouver, British Columbia.

 

PO Heiberg died when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors.

 

Petty Officer Kenneth Gordon Heiberg, wife Mary Gertrude Heiberg, and two daughters ages 16 months and 2 ½ years reside at 3075 St. Catherine's, Vancouver. Petty Officer Heiberg, 29 has been in the Royal Canadian Navy for 13 years enlisting on May 04, 1931 at British Columbia. He was born in Lang Saskatchewan. He was aboard the destroyers Fraser and Assiniboine when they were brought to Canada from England and was aboard the Assiniboine when she took part in capture of the German merchant ship Hannover. His wife and daughter have been in Vancouver about a month before his death. Mrs. Heiberg received a telegram last Friday informing her that Petty Officer Heiberg was missing. He was going to get leave after this voyage, his wife told The Vancouver Sun. He was the son of Morris Heiberg who came from Norway to homestead southwest of Lang in 1902. His mother Julianna (Hendrickson) arrived from Wisconsin a couple of years later and they were Lang's first newlyweds.
