HOLMES, Earl Ira, AB, 4066, RCN, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of Ira Layton Holmes and Esther Lorinda Holmes, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

 

Able Seaman Holmes died when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors.

 

Able Seaman Earl Holmes was born at Swift Current and educated at Fox school, Waldeck, and Swift Current collegiate. He enlisted on November 18, 1940 as a boy seaman at Esquimalt, British Columbia. A younger brother Owen lives at home, he also has two sisters.
