HOUGHTON, David Harvey, O/Sig, V27568, RCNVR, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of William Archibald and Eva P. Houghton, of Toronto, Ontario.
Ordinary Signalman Houghton died when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors.
Ordinary Signalman David Harvey Houghton enlisted in the R.C.N. in June, 1940. He trained at St. Hyacinthe and Toronto, and HMCS Ottawa was his first ship. He was born in Toronto and attended Danforth Park School and East York collegiate. He was a salesman at the time of his enlistment. His wedding to Miss Frances Fraser, Randolph Road, Leaside, was planned for next month. Signalman Houghton son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Houghton, Highbourne Road and has three sisters, Eva, Violet and Margaret, and one brother, Wilfred, all of Toronto. Ordinary Signalman Houghton wrote home stating, "It's been pretty exciting out here and believe me, the Germans are not having the best of it", who told of Atlantic action in a letter home.
