HOWARD, Frederick Chaffer, Tel, 3774, RCN, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of William Chaffer Howard and Gertrude Maud Howard, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Telegraphist Howard died when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors.
Telegraphist Frederick Chaffer Howard, Service No. 3774, R.C.N., 19 years old. Son of William Chaffer Howard and Gertrude Maud Howard, of 205 Lenore Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born in Burnley Lancashire, he immigrated to Canada with his parents. He was educated at Daniel Macintyre Collegiate. He was active in sports and played hockey for church teams. He enlisted in the Navy in Sep 1940.
